Lo-Fi Crunch sounds like pink noise played back through an early video-game console or a broken sampler: gritty, aliased and crunchy, with a distinctive digital grain and a rolled-off, muffled top end from the reduced sample rate. It is more character than comfort, and it makes no attempt to hide that.
The color is exactly 3, pink, with uniform distribution for extra grit. The bit depth is reduced to 6 bits, which adds quantization noise and a stepped, crunchy texture, and the sample rate is divided by 8, which introduces aliasing and cuts the highest frequencies. There is no pulse or EQ, and the fade-in is two seconds.
It is used for retro game and music sound design and by people who simply like the texture. Warm Hiss is the analogue-flavoured alternative using saturation, and Machine Rhythm in the experimental category applies a milder 10-bit crush to a four-voice rhythm. It sits well under chiptune or lo-fi beats where a clean noise would sound out of place.
